The Forge in Sheffield is located near to Sheffield United Football Club and in an area popular with students. The project is one of the largest modular builds ever undertaken in the UK and is our largest scheme to date. 1378 modules were installed in just 61 days. Comprising 1030 bedrooms, 68 wet bedrooms and 42 studios. The scheme is split into 4 buildings, 11 blocks over 3, 4, 5 and 6 stories. Installation rate was up to 40 modules per day at high points during the build with two cranes.
A steel frame structure with pre-cast floors was utilised in the core areas to contain the stairs and lift shafts. The plan shape of the modular blocks provided adequate lengths of modular wall to enable all lateral wind loads to be transferred to the foundations by the in-plane shear resistance of the modular construction.
Simple ply roofing laid to 1.5 degrees falls spans between the load bearing modular walls clad with a single ply membrane roof finish.
